Frequently Asked Questions about
SrDA POP1. What does
SrDA POP mean?S
imple remote Data Access to your Point Of Presence. Simple means uncomplicated compared to current modem setup and use. Point of Presence is a telephony term meaning a point where a network terminates and is connected to a network switch.
2. What is different between
SrDA POP and other modems?SrDA POP
is designed to provide the user comprehensive operational detail on modem dial setup, call answering, modem training, modem handshaking, and real time operational performance. Plus provide comprehensive diagnostics regarding call disconnection reasons. The
reason why this capability has not been provided by the tens of millions of other modems produced to date is the direct result of these other modems implementation of the Hayes AT command set. Because the Hayes AT command set does not provide for real time communications between the modem controller logic and the modem data pump during actual modem operation, then there is an effective wall that prevents detailed operational data from being reported in real time to any computer modem driver, application or network management program.SrDA POP
communicates directly with the modem data pump and uses NDISTAPI instead of the Hayes AT command set. Real time operational information is reported by the SrDA POP NDISWAN driver via an NDISLOG file to the SrDALog NT console application which is illustrated below.|

For example, receive speed
RxSpeed and transmit speed TxSpeed are reported in real time. For V.34, K56flex, or V.90 operations, these speeds can be different. Reporting this type of basic information in real time is non-existent in any implementation of a serial port modem driven by Hayes AT commands. SrDALog panel, a user can get a pop up screen which describes each of the data fields by hitting the ? key while focus is on the panel. The panel and application can be terminated at any time by hitting the Q key and then restarted at any time desired. One of the most important data fields is the
Disc Code field. It reports by number, the reason why a call terminated and/or whether or not unusual conditions were encountered. A pop up screen describing each of these codes can be obtained by entering the value of the code followed by the enter key. There are approximately 190 codes that have been defined and implemented.
3. What is the best way to connect
SrDA POP with the telephone network?SrDA POP
is best connected directly to the corporate PBX or directly to the local exchange carrier switch using Centrex connections. Both of these facilities can set up the multiple lines in a hunt group or dial group. If the connection is made to the corporate PBX then it is important that the PBX have digital T1 trunking to the local exchange or long distance exchange switch. This is necessary to achieve K56flex or V.90 connections. If the connection is made directly to the local exchange carrier switch then K56flex or V.90 connections can be successfully achieved.
4. With all this xDSL and cable data modem technology, why should I install a
SrDA POP?Backup and flexibility
. The telephone network is still the most ubiquitous network and in some cases, the least expensive network.Current projections estimate that nearly 700 million copper wire access lines connect homes and business customers to the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) worldwide. More than 95 percent of the local access loops consist of a single pair supporting Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS).
POTS is everywhere.
5. Can Multilink PPP connections be setup between Win 98 and Win NT Server?
Yes.
Win98 systems at home which have access to multiple telephone lines and have multiple modems installed ( or SrDA POP ) can setup MLPPP connections to a SrDA POP installed in an NT Server.
6. Where is
SrDA POP positioned in the Windows Communications architecture? At all dial-up server ports
. The RAS direct dial communication option is a perfect match for SrDA POP. It provides multiple ports for dial-up, demand dial LAN - LAN MLPPP connections, and just plain old backup.|
